I am delighted to bring you this story on the 2017 Who is on Next? winner for the accessories category, Andrea Mondin. Mr. Mondin is from Treviso, Italy and also attended its High Art School. After graduating Andrea completed a European Fashion course in Pordenone which led to an internship with Roberto Cavalli. During his time at Cavalli Andrea Mondin worked on the F/W 2001 and S/S 2002 collections.
Motivated by this experience Mr. Mondin moved to Milan and graduated from Istituto Europeo di Design. Dolce and Gabbana came calling after graduation and he worked with the company for three years in their accessories dept. Versace is another company Andrea Mondin worked for after being contacted by Gianni Versace. Mondin first designed the Versace women’s shoe collection then proceeded to design for the Versus collection. Finally, after working for the label he launched his first collection, Ida for the Fall 2017 season.
Andrea’s Fall 2017 collection is heavily influenced by the world of haute couture and a lot of his designs takes inspiration from American custom hat designs for the 40s and 50s. Each shoe has a feature that was popular on hats from that period such as coquetips feathers, horse-hair, ruche motifs and pois fishnet ruffs. Looking at the detailing and craftsmanship put into each shoe it is no wonder Mondin won at this year’s Who is on Next? competition.
